Meet NMFA Member Rebecca Mezoff

Contemporary tapestry artist

I am currently working on mostly small format things due to a temporary move and job in Alamosa, CO. I am expecting to have my studio intact again (with big looms!) by January. I continue to teach workshops throughout the USA and really enjoy this interaction with students. Teaching improves my own thought processes about tapestry and improves my design skills. I dye all my yarn both for the students and for myself. I enjoy working in the dye studio and spent a lot of the fall working out new color formulas.

My work over the last few years has largely been the Emergence series. These pieces are based on an image of a spiral which comes from the petroglyphs that surrounded my house on Prieta Mesa in Velarde, NM. The spiral image signifies emergence from another place, the constant nature of change, and the continued journey we all experience in life (whether we want to or not!).

Emergence II-- This piece was purchased last year by Colorado Northwestern Community College
in Craig, CO for their new building.

Emergence V: The Center Place

Emergence V was designed just after my teacher James Koehler died in 2011 and includes images from Chaco Canyon. I was on my way to Chaco when I found out he had passed away. Chaco is a place of great mystery for me and each time I return there I leave with more questions than answers about the place and about my own life. I also love to look at the rock walls there. The construction of the walls as well as the colors and patterns are fascinating.

We have a lovely selection of organic colorgrown cotton yarns, including the Fox Fibre organic cotton yarns and spinning fiber, as well as low impact dyed organic cotton yarn.  I handspin and weave and stock the yarns and fibers I love such as quality merino spinning wool, and exotics such as silk, bamboo, soybean, and SeaCell.  Silk has become a favorite for weaving and knitting,  and I have several sizes available in the natural ecru and handpainted colors.

Hand painting and printing with fiber reactive dyes on natural fiber fabrics.  Original design women's clothing and accessories.  Workshops, custom orders, custom fabrics for interiors and remnants for your own projects.

"My current focus is on combining hard edge(silk screened) and soft edge(painted) patterns together to create lively intricate surfaces. I often use similar colors so the whole effect is rich and understated, not loud. I am working on delicate and lightweight silks as well as heavy, textural silk fabrics, My newest fabric is a silk seersucker I call Frothy Silk.

I am also drawing and painting the landscape often, these days. I am making paintings on canvas of my expressionist/realistic images. I have not worked like this for a number of years and it is inspiring to see how my eye and skills have evolved.

I am teaching this summer for the first time in a couple of years. There will be a whole day silk painting and stenciling workshop on August 9th, in my studio in Edgewood.  Contact me for information on more workshops."

I create fiber pieces that incorporate felting, applique and collage techniques.
The photos below are of wall-hangings that are part of my "Thumbelina" series.  I use a combination of felting, quilting, appliqué and collage to create the pieces.  The first photo is of "How will you say good-bye?" The second shows some of the detail of that piece.  The third is "Can it be only the lonely are free?" While the fourth displays additional detail of that piece.  Each one is intended to reflect Thumbelina's feelings as she moves through her world.

David M. Gallegos

Weaving and the fiber arts are an integral part of my life.  I was surrounded with pieces woven by my mother, Eva Rael Gallegos, and grandmother, Stella Quintana Rael.  There were rag rugs on the floors and beautiful, colorful fresadas on the beds; and many woven pieces on tables and dressers, as well as saddle blankets in the stables.  It is quite natural that I would be drawn to weaving.

In the summmer of 2002, my mother and I spent three weeks in the Community Center in Cerro where she taught me how to warp one of the old WPA looms and how to weave simple stripes.  The following year, I built a loom at Northern New Mexico College.  My mother continues to teach and encourage me.

The focus of my first rugs was learning how the loom works and discovering the joy of using patterns and color, especially traditional Rio Grande designs and interpretations of work done by my mother and grandmother.   I naturally gravitate to bright and bold colors that stand out.  All the rugs are carefully planned, drawn and colored on paper before I get on the loom.

My work in 2011 reflects the images and designs I saw on my journey to Italy.  One piece is my interpretation of the landing on the Scala d’ Oro in the Doge’s Palace in Venice, another design was inspired by a fresco in the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence, and the mosaic floors of the Vatican Museums inspired another.

I have shown my work at the Fiber Arts Fiesta in Albuquerque, the Questa Vencidad Studio Tour, Artesanos de Questa Artist of the Month, The Regalos Holiday Gift Show at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Studio Mares in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Contemporary Hispanic Market in Santa Fe.  For the first time in a number of years, I am not planning to participate in any shows or markets in 2012, choosing instead to concentrate on weaving and discovering new techniques.
